The first step to living a Bill Murray kind of life is to be spontaneous. Murray has become famous for randomly showing up to give a soon to be newlywed couple advice on life, taking tickets at a minor league baseball game, or to join you and your friends for some karaoke. These moments make news because…well… BIll ‘fuggin’ Murray, but their impact can be universally held and/or created by those not named Bill Murray.
Honesty is always the best policy. When asked about his most recent role in the film St. VIncent, Murray replied, “….because they couldn’t get Jack Nicholson… no, really, it’s well documented”. This of course only endears Murray more.
In between bouts of spontaneity, create an aura of scarcity for impact. Murray does not have an agent, he does not have a manager, in fact, what he has is a very hard to come by toll free number. That’s right, if you want to get in touch with Bill Murray, you need to reach him via his exclusive toll free number. This creates quite the aura surrounding him because he can be incredibly difficult to locate, and then the next thing you read about is him giving a speech at a random wedding rehearsal dinner. This only grows the enigma.
The biggest key to success is to relax. Murray once said, “You have to remind yourself that you can do the very best you can when you’re very, very relaxed. No matter what it is, no matter what the job is, the more relaxed you are, the better you are.”
The final step to living a Bill Murray kind of life is to always remember that you are you, and no one else is. We can all get caught up in what other’s are trying to do, and to want to be like someone else, or envy what someone else has and what they’re doing, but it’s important to remember that holistically you are the only individual that is you and it’s important to not only remember that, but to embrace it.
Cheers to you Bill Murray!
